Names & Titles - Official name of the Khmer Empire: The Great Empire of Kampuchea, where His Imperial majesty, the emperor, reigns, the Empire of eternal peace and prosperity. - Now known as: Cambodia. This is derived from the Sanskrit term 'kamboja' which is the name of an Iranian tribe which has no castes. Cambodia does not practice the caste system. Therefore, 'kamboja' actually implies 'casteless babarians'. - The Khmer Empire was founded by king Jayavarman II in 802 AD. - Some titles the emperor carries are "His Divineness the Almighty Emperor of the Great Empire of Kampuchea, Divine Emperor of Kampuchea, Chakravatin, King of the World, Son of the Gods, and Great Ruler of the Khmer People.
About the monarchy - There has only been one reigning woman (Suryavana, 1145-1160) even though the current constitution allows women to ascend the throne.
About the architecture - Angkor Wat and many other Khmer temples were previously covered in gold, but over the course of hundreds of years the gold has faded away. The Imperial Palace, however, is still mostly covered in gold due to it's monthly maintenance. - The ancient city of Angkor Thom could sustain up to 150,000 people.
Strange laws - These laws were introduced by Emperor Vilaksanavarman I, but most are not enforced. 1) You may not die if you see a picture of the emperor or empress (considered as disloyalty) 2) It is illegal to talk to the emperor without permission, to insult the Imperial Family, to touch the Imperial Family, and to enter the Palace without invitation. Only the Imperial Family, High Priests and Palace staff may enter. 3) It is illegal to dress up as a member of the Imperial Family (considered as mockery) 4) It is illegal to overthrow the government without asking permission from the emperor. 5) It is illegal to say hello to a tree. 6) Everybody must be happy when the emperor is happy. 7) It is illegal to fall asleep during a speech of the emperor or empress. 8) It is illegal to die without permission of the emperor.
